DESCRIPTION:Professor John Criswell\, Department of Computer Science\, Uni
versity of Rochester\nCommodity operating system kernels are the foundatio
 n of our software systems\, providing access control\, I/O mechanisms\, an
d memory management.  However\, operating system kernels are vulnerable t
o a variety of security attacks.  Compromising the kernel allows an attac
ker to render any security protections\, provided by the kernel or the app
lications running on the kernel\, useless.\nIn this talk\, he will present
Virtual Ghost: a system that protects the confidentiality and integrity o
f application data from an operating system kernel that is completely unde
r an attacker’s control.  Virtual Ghost provides applications with priv
ate\, incorruptible memory\, incorruptible control flow\, and secure key d
elivery.  With these features\, applications can protect their data from
the operating system kernel.  Unlike previous systems\, Virtual Ghost emp
loys compiler techniques to protect applications and is faster than previo
us solutions that rely on hypervisor-based approaches.
