DESCRIPTION:Prof. Themis Palpanas\, University of Trento\nIn the last few 
 years\, we have been witnessing an evergrowing need\nfor continuous observ
 ation and monitoring applications. This need\nis driven by recent technolo
 gical advances that have made\nstreaming applications possible\, and by th
 e fact that analysts in\nvarious domains have realized the value that such
  applications can\nprovide.\nIn this presentation\, we describe a general 
 framework for enabling\ncomplex applications over data streams. This frame
 work is based on\nefficiently computing an approximation of multi-dimensio
 nal\ndistributions of streaming data\, and is amenable to distributed\nope
 ration\, thus\, making better use of the available resources. We\ndemonstr
 ate the use of the proposed framework for the diverse\nproblems of deviati
 on detection\, and detection and tracking of\nhomogeneous regions.\nFinall
 y\, we briefly discuss future research directions in this\ngeneral area. P
