DESCRIPTION:Prof. Urs Baltensperger\, Lab. of Atmospheric Chemistry\, Paul
Scherrer Institut\nThe potential influence of ions from galactic cosmic r
ays (GCR) on the atmospheric aerosol nucleation processes may play an impo
rtant role relevant for climate. Similarly\, understanding of the dependen
ce of the nucleation rate on the concentration of the nucleating substance
s has not been reached. With well controlled and essentially contaminant f
ree conditions in the CLOUD chamber\, we were able to show that sulfuric a
cid is an important component for particle formation\, however\, the conce
ntrations of sulfuric acid are not high enough to explain the atmospheric
observations. The influence of ions by GCR on particle formation is evalua
 ted.
