DESCRIPTION:By : Jens Grossklags - The Pennsylvania State University\nIC F
aculty candidateAbstract :\nThe ubiquity of information technology has all
owed people and businesses to form networks on a scale that was previously
unimaginable. While the resulting interdependencies can yield very benefi
cial outcomes\, they can also increase risks when access and trust relatio
nships are exploited. In this talk\, I will present three studies that tac
kle the problem space of interdependent privacy and security.\nFirst\, I w
ill present a model of privacy decision-making in the context of third-par
ty application markets. Motivated by theoretical work in behavioral econom
ics\, I will analyze users’ decisions about the release of their own dat
a\, but also the data of their personal connections. The insights guide te
chnical and economic approaches to protect privacy in social networks.\nSe
cond\, users’ data is increasingly solicited for data analytics projects
aiming for insights with societal importance such as in health or public
policy. In a game-theoretic model\, users are offered control over their p
articipation in data analytics projects\, but data analysts can shape the
decision-making environment. The solutions to this trade-off scenario offe
r pathways to effectively utilize accumulated user data in privacy-respect
ful ways.  \nThird\, I will address the threat of catastrophic security
events by providing a mathematical model for the assessment of interdepend
ent security in networked systems. The model determines the probability di
stribution on the number of compromised nodes in a security event which is
a needed result for diverse risk-management approaches such as cyber-insu
rance.Bio :\nJens Grossklags is an Assistant Professor and holds the endow
ed Haile Family Early Career Professorship at the College of Information S
ciences and Technology\, Pennsylvania State University. Previously\, he se
rved as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Center for Information Te
chnology Policy\, Princeton University. He conducted his dissertation rese
arch at UC Berkeley’s School of Information. While at UC Berkeley\, he a
lso obtained master’s degrees in Computer Science\, and Information Mana
gement and Systems. He is studying information privacy and security\, tech
nology policy and networked interactions from a theoretical and practical
 perspective.More information
