DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mélanie Preynas\, CRPP-EPFL\nThe Wendelstein 7-X experime
nt is a high performance nuclear fusion device of the stellarator type whi
ch is designed for steady state operation. The commissioning of the machin
e has started in May 2014 and the first operation phase is scheduled for 2
 015. The main plasma heating system will be ECRH with the launch of up to
10MW cw microwave power at 140GHz in 2nd harmonic X- or O-mode. The machin
e is composed of five sections. In each of the sections 1 and 5 are instal
led two ECRH equatorial launchers. Such front steering launchers can quasi
-optically transmit three individual 1 MW rf beams to the plasma for up to
30 minutes\nSeveral protective diagnostics have been designed to ensure a
safe operation of the ECRH system\, such as sniffer probes measuring stra
y radiation level\, waveguides embedded in the inner wall measuring non ab
sorbed power and a video diagnostic.\nAfter a short introduction of W7-X\,
the presentation will focus on the description of the ECRH system and the
video diagnostic system developed as a protective diagnostic for ECRH ope
 ration.
