 Major concrete infrastructures (such as dams\, nuclear power plants\, offs
 hore structures) play a crucial role in societal needs. As such\, they are
  (or should be!) continuously scrutinized\, analyzed and diagnosed for pos
 sible damage/failure which could be catastrophic in terms of human loss an
 d property damage.\nThis talk will address two major safety concerns: agin
 g through Alkali Aggregate Reaction\, and shaking by a strong ground excit
 ation. In both cases cracking is nearly inevitable.\nUnfortunately\, where
 as we are well equipped to design those new structures (usually linear ela
 stic)\, we are not yet well equipped to properly assess their safety (typi
 cally\, this will require sophisticated nonlinear analyses rooted in advan
 ced testing and proper constitutive models).\nThis talk will show how inno
 vative laboratory tests can lead to numerical models\, and finally to prac
 tical investigation within the context of a nonlinear analysis. All exampl

 .About the speaker :\nVictor Saouma is a Professor of Civil Engineering at
  the University of Colorado in Boulder. He is the president of FramCoS and
  Chair of RILEM Committee on Prognosis of deterioration and loss of servic
 eability in structures affected by alkali-silica reactions. His current wo
 rk is funded by both the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Nuclear Reg
 ulatory Commission.
