DESCRIPTION:John Hong\, Qualcomm MEMS Technologie\, Inc\nThe breathtaking
rate of smartphone proliferation across the globe continues to climb\, wit
h shipments topping 1B in 2014 [1].  A recent entry into the mobile devic
e arena is the wearable category\, expected by some to reach 200 million i
n 2016 [2]. This exciting market development includes the likes of smartwa
tches\, fitness/healthcare devices and wearable cameras.   Such personal
devices integrate an impressive set of computing and communication capabi
lities to satisfy the users’ demand for contextual\, relevant and immedi
ate content. There are two unique display requirements that stem from mobi
lity: ideally\, the display should be 1) always on and 2) always viewable.
The always-on feature of a display isdifficult to implement since phone
s are powered by batteries which have limited capacity that is not expecte
d to improve significantly over time.  In addition\, mobile applications\
, as a rule\, involve uncontrolled viewing conditions\, the most difficult
of which is viewing in direct sunlight\, making the second mandate also d
ifficult to satisfy.\nIn this presentation\, we introduce next generation
Qualcomm® Mirasol™ display technology that integrates an optical MEMS s
tructure with an IGZO TFT backplane to implement a reflective color displa
y system that supports great image quality in virtually all viewing condit
ions and a power efficiency advantage that can be an order of magnitude be
tter than competing technologies. We review the concepts of interferometri
c absorption that gives rise to high gamut\, reflective color performance\
, describe the system technologies that have enabled our developments\, an
d present compelling demonstrations of our progress. By enabling always-on
and always-visible applications\, low power Mirasol displays significantl
 y enhance the mobile user experience.\n[1] Trend Force\, http://press.tren
