DESCRIPTION:Dr Benoît Crouzy\, MeteoSwiss\, Payerne\, CH\nAbstract:\nWe f
irst review the current practices for airborne pollen and spores monitorin
g based on volumetric sampling and manual microscope counting. We then dis
cuss the advantages of an automated system producing real-time data and po
ssible applications.\nDifferent prototypes for automatic pollen monitoring
were tested at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology in Payer
ne. Those systems are based either on image recognition or on air-flow cyt
ometry. While all systems were able to show good correlation with manual c
ounts regarding total pollen count\, the identification of different taxa
appears to be more challenging. We focus on the system currently in valida
tion phase at MeteoSwiss (PA-300\, Plair\, Switzerland)\, expected to demo
nstrate the capability of detecting and counting different types of partic
les\, including some air pollutants and several pollen types. We present r
esults of pollen identification tests and a first comparison between manua
l and automatic counts for the 2015 campaign.Short biography:\nBenoît Cro
uzy studied physics at EPFL and ETHZ. After a PhD in theoretical physics (
2009) he moved to hydrology and spent four years as a postdoc in the group
of professor Paolo Perona (EPFL). Currently he is working as a scientist
at MeteoSwiss in the group of biometeorology (group leader Dr. Bernard Clo
t).\nHe is mainly interested in mathematical methods applied to environmen
 tal sciences.
