DESCRIPTION:Prof. Stefano Spaccapietra\nAbstract\n\nNot surprisingly\, an
information retrieval company is becoming one of the major players in IT s
ervices. Indeed\, we spend much of our time looking for information\, know
ing that it is hidden somewhere\, spread out into many different fragments
\, within the massive amount of web pages that people keep posting on the
Web. It would help to be able to delegate the task of finding information
to specialized services (agents in AI terminology). Yet we would like to b
e sure that these agents understand what we are looking for and similarly
understand what the available information is and means. Some fundamental q
uestions about intercommunication suddenly become major issues. How can we
be sure that we do understand the words that other people use in talking
to us? Beyond words and sentences\, how can we be sure that we correctly g
rasp which thoughts and knowledge led other persons/agents to express them
selves using these sentences? How can we be aware of and accommodate cultu
ral differences\, combined with other influences due to present circumstan
ces in a specific place and at a specific time? Can we understand all thes
e communication facets and knowledge facets without having to resort to a
framework that knows everything about everybody and every subject? In shor
t\, grasping the semantics of things is the challenge. We will discuss som
e basic principles on which to build a solution.\n\n(Registration is close
