DESCRIPTION:Peter Mika is a Director of Research at Yahoo Labs\, based in
London\, UK\, where he is working on the applications of semantic technolo
gy to Web search. He received his MSc and PhD in computer science (summa c
um laude) from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is the author of the book
'Social Networks and the Semantic Web' (Springer\, 2007). In 2008 he has b
een selected as one of "AI's Ten to Watch" by the editorial board of the I
EEE Intelligent Systems journal. Peter is a regular speaker at both academ
ic and technology conferences and serves on the advisory board of a number
of public and private initiatives. He also represents Yahoo! in the leade
rship of the schema.org collaboration with Google\, Bing and Yandex.\nThe
key idea of the Semantic Web is to make information on the Web easily cons
umable by machines. As machines start to understand web pages as sources o
f data\, search on the Web will move well beyond the current paradigm of r
etrieving pages by keywords. Instead\, search engines will start to answer
complex queries based on the cumulative knowledge of the Web. In this pre
sentation\, we will review the brief history of Semantic Search in academi
c research and in developments across the search industry. We also look ah
ead to highlight the research challenges that have surfaced and remain uns
 olved.
