DESCRIPTION:Michail-Savvas Anastopoulos-Tzanis\, Univ. of York\, UK\nMicro
-tearing modes (MTMs) are considered as an additional candidate for explai
ning enhanced electron transport in present and future tokamaks. MTMs are
destabilised due to the existence of electron temperature gradient ∇Te i
 n the semi-collisional regime nei/w*ne > 1. However\, gyro-kinetic simulat
ions revealed that MTMs are destabilised even in the collision-less nei/w*
ne ≪ 1 regime indicating the existence of additional drive mechanisms an
d possible contribution from magnetic drifts. A review of the linear dispe
rsion relation in the collision-less regime in slab geometry\, resulted in
negative growth rate indicating stability. Further simulations of the ful
l linear problem in cylindrical geometry using the GS2 code\, were in acco
rdance with previous simulations and the complex frequency of the system a
greed qualitatively with analytic theory. Moreover\, extension to toroidal
geometry revealed the strong destabilising influence of magnetic gradient
drifts and trapped particle effects. However\, the effect of curvature dr
ifts was found to have minute influence for further destabilisation. Final
ly\, MTMs were found to change drive for large values of the electric resi
stivity he\, which was accompanied by destabilisation in the collision-les
 s regime.
