DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ullrich Steiner\, Adolphe Merkle Institute\, Université
de Fribourg\, Suisse\nOrdered mesoporous structures made from plasmonic m
etals have recently attracted great attention because of the possibility t
o manufacture optical materials that exhibit a negative refractive index.
These optical metamaterials intrinsically focus light beyond the diffra
ction limit and are able to coherently guide light around objects\, “clo
aking”  them.  The challenge is however to manufacture well-defined ma
terials with sufficiently small periodicities that act as 3D metamaterials
for visible light.\nIn my talk\, I will introduce a methodology that empl
oys the self-assmbly of block-copolymer for the manufacture of optical met
amaterials.  We target in particular the gyroid morphology\, which has th
ree chiral axes\,  because structurally chiral materials are predicted to
feature a negative refractive index.  We have investigated the replicati
on of self-assembled polymer morphologies into gold and silver and have st
udied their optical properties.   The replicated gyroid morphology exhib
its high transparency arising form the propagation of  strongly anisotrop
ic plasmon modes that give rise to both linear and circular dichroism acro
 ss the visible region.
