DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ullrich Steiner\, Adolphe Merkle Institute\, Fribourg\,
SuisseHomepage\nOrdered mesoporous structures made from plasmonic metals h
ave recently attracted great attention because of the possibility to manuf
acture optical materials that exhibit a negative refractive index.  These
optical metamaterials intrinsically focus light beyond the diffraction li
mit and are able to coherently guide light around objects\, “cloaking”
them.  The challenge is however to manufacture well-defined materials
with sufficiently small periodicities that act as 3D metamaterials for vis
ible light.\nIn my talk\, I will introduce a methodology that employs the
self-assmbly of block-copolymer for the manufacture of optical metamateria
ls.  We target in particular the gyroid morphology\, which has three chir
al axes\,  because structurally chiral materials are predicted to feature
a negative refractive index.  We have investigated the replication of se
lf-assembled polymer morphologies into gold and silver and have studied th
eir optical properties.   The replicated gyroid morphology exhibits high
transparency arising form the propagation of  strongly anisotropic plasm
on modes that give rise to both linear and circular dichroism across the v
 isible region.
