 inia University\, Morgantown\, USA\nFusion energy sciences aims to expand 
 the fundamental understanding of matter across wide ranges of temperature\
 , density\, and energy-density and to build the scientific foundation need
 ed to develop a fusion energy source. This is accomplished by studying pla
 sma parameters\, dynamics\, and interactions with its surroundings\, by re
 solving the essential physics principles\, and by creating predictive theo
 retical and computational models. In order to also achieve the broadest ra
 nge of plasma science discoveries\, institutional and agency partnerships 
 in select physics-discovery frontiers can be emphasized to resolve grand s
 cientific challenges in some areas of every U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Science
 s subprogram in all constrained-budget scenarios. This talk will provide a
  perspective on critically important questions in these areas and on scien
 tific gaps where opportunity exists for the U.S. to make important contrib
 utions to the international collaboration in fusion energy development. I 
 will briefly describe the Z Astrophysical Plasma Properties (ZAPP) collabo
 ration at Sandia National Laboratories’ Z Pulsed Power Facility and the 
 Space-Plasma Campaign at UCLA’s Basic Plasma Science Facility as example
 s of intermediate user facilities contributing at the astronomical-observa
 tion and laboratory-plasma interface.
