DESCRIPTION:Maurizio Molinari\, Institute for Research in Biomedicine\, Be
llinzona\nThe endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contains folding machineries that
assist maturation of newly synthesized polypeptides and ER-associated deg
radation (ERAD) machineries that remove non-native proteins. Uncontrolled
ERAD interferes with protein maturation by inappropriate recognition and d
estruction of intermediates of ongoing folding programs. This is prevented
\, at steady state\, by a series of events collectively defined as ERAD tu
ning that insure the selective removal of ERAD regulators from the ER lume
 n in LC3-I coated vesicles\, the EDEMosomes.\nFormation of these ER-derive
d vesicles is co-opted by positive strand RNA coronaviruses (CoVs) such as
the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV and mouse hepatitis viru
s (MHV) for the formation of double-membrane vesicles (DMVs) to which thei
r replication and transcription complexes are anchored.
