DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Atienza Alonso\nInaugural Lecture(Conference in En
glish)Abstract: The evolution of semiconductor process technologies has en
abled the design of low cost\, compact and high-performance embedded syste
ms. These new embedded systems are computing platforms with multi-processo
r system-on-chip (MPSoC) architectures that can be deployed ubiquitously\,
and provide computing capacity for a better understanding of our environm
ent in order to continue the progress at our society. However\, the inhere
nt resource-constrained nature of embedded systems\, coupled with their in
crease of power and heat density\, can result in degraded performance or a
global energy crisis. Thus\, I will address how we must change our curren
t electronic design methodologies to conceive the next generation energy-e
fficient computing systems. This talk advocates for a system-level approac
h to synergistically design both hardware and software components\, as wel
l as capitalizing on a better understanding how living organisms operate\,
in order to embed more onboard intelligence and dramatically reduce the e
nergy consumption of future computing systems.Program\n-Introduction by Pr

n-Inaugural Lecture of David Atienza: "Designing embedded systems for the
new era of computing"Registration required: http://go.epfl.ch/Atienza\nBio
: David Atienza is associate professor of EE and director of the Embedded
Systems Laboratory (ESL) at EPFL\, Switzerland. He received his MSc and Ph
D degrees in computer science and engineering from UCM\, Spain\, and IMEC\
, Belgium\, in 2001 and 2005\, respectively. His research interests focus
 on system-level design methodologies for multi-processor Systems-on-Chip (
MPSoC) architectures\, including new thermal-aware design for 2D and 3D MP
SoCs\, low-power design methods for wireless body sensors\, and memory man
agement of embedded systems. In these fields\, he is co-author of more tha
n 200 publications in prestigious journals and international conferences\,
several book chapters and seven U.S. patents. He has earned several best
paper awards at top venues in electronic design automation\, and computing
system engineering in these areas. He received the IEEE CEDA Early Career
Award in 2013\, the ACM SIGDA Outstanding New Faculty Award in 2012 and a
Faculty Award from Sun Labs at Oracle in 2011. He is a Distinguished Lect
urer (2014-2015) of the IEEE CASS\, and Senior Member of IEEE and ACM.
