DESCRIPTION:Martin Geidl\, Swisscom Energy solutions\nSwisscom Energy Solu
 tions AG was founded in 2012 as a start-up within the Swisscom group (www.
 tiko.ch). The company has developed and realized a virtual energy storage 
 which consists of several thousand flexible electric loads in private hous
 es throughout Switzerland\, such as electric heatings\, heat pumps\, hot w
 ater boilers\, etc. The back-end system communicates with locally installe
 d metering and control devices via the mobile communication system and in-
 house power line carrier technology. The loads are permanently monitored a
 nd controlled in a way that ensures the consumers’ comfort is not affect
 ed. The flexibility of the aggregated load is used to provide secondary co
 ntrol power in real-time to the system operator Swissgrid AG. Customers be
 nefit from cost-free installations and various functionalities accessible 
 via webpage and smart phone application\, such as transparency of consumpt
 ion\, remote control\, eco mode\, and an alarming system. Electricity supp
 liers and distribution grid operators benefit from increased customer rete
 ntion\, access to real-time consumption data\, extension or replacement of
  the standard ripple control\, and the possibility of active network manag
 ement. The first installations were done in 2012. One year later\, the tec
 hnical prequalification certificate for secondary control was obtained. Si
 nce 2014\, the system is on the market providing secondary control.\nBio: 
 Martin Geidl obtained a Master degree from Graz University of Technology a
 nd a PhD from ETH Zurich\, both in Electrical Engineering. From 2007 to 20
 13 he worked for Swissgrid AG\, the Swiss national transmission system ope
 rator. In 2014 Martin Geidl joined Swisscom Energy Solutions AG\, where he
  is responsible for operation of a virtual energy storage consisting of fl
 exible loads. Martin Geidl is a part-time lecturer at the University of Ap
 plied Sciences in Rapperswil\, Switzerland.
