DESCRIPTION:Vahid Moosavi\, Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design
(CAAD)\, ETH Zurich\nWith the democratization of computational technologi
es from the last decades and the ever-growing access to urban data streams
\, the computational modeling has been established as an orthogonal discip
line to classical fields of applied research. Nevertheless\, we think that
a proper research question in this new field should be: how rather than m
erely automating classical modeling processes\, how we should cultivate an
d promote fundamentally different concepts to the field of scientific mode
ling\, which are only feasible through an appropriate level of “computat
ional and data literacy”.\nToward this goal\, from an abstract point of
view to the main issues of scientific modeling\, we introduce the concept
of “modeling in coexistence with data streams” as an alternative to th
e state of the art in computational modeling and simulation. Upon this con
ceptual framework\, in a technical level we discuss the potentials of a se
ries of mathematical techniques such as Self Organizing Maps (SOM) and Mar
kov Chains.\nFurther\, as the proposed modeling ideas are very generic\, w
e present three experimental applications in different domains\, including
transportation dynamics\, urban air pollution modeling and a new notion o
f geographic mapping\, called contextual mapping.
