DESCRIPTION:Dimitry Demin\, Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design
  (CAAD)\, ETH Zurich\, Co-Founder Algotecture (www.algotecture.com)\nThe
lecture “towards a new form of building envelopes” outlined an interdi
sciplinary approach to engineering and construction in the design of compl
ex free-form geometry building envelopes\, an approach which necessitates
the design of customized tools. To achieve time-efficient design and energ
y-sustainable fabrication methods the focus is shifted\, on an explicit in
formational level\, to the idea of merging the aesthetic design idea and k
now-how of facade designing techniques and technologies. This erosion of b
oundaries results in an increase of data and a consequent growth of comple
xity of design and manufacturing computational tasks. In large projects th
e effect of this growth of complexity is to limit computational resources
to the establishment of an interactive work-flow between design and fabric
 ation processes\, including parameters for quality\, flexibility\, speed o
f structural engineering and topological models. One major aspect of the i
nfluence of this type of interactive work-flow on architectural and struct
ural design is to search\, predict\, or model specific information in a gi
ven data-set in order to generate new knowledge and cause manifold possibl
e solutions. Computer science offers methods such as evolutionary computat
ion\, machine learning\, and data mining and all of these have a great dea
l to offer in the field of presenting a knowledge-base for design work-flo
 w. These methods also advance the interaction between structural\, mechani
cal and architectural systems and in this new form of building envelopes r
epresent significant key factors for innovation and digital technology.
