DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul R. Vasos\nIn order to reach beyond the current molecu
 lar size and timescale limits of structural and dynamic studies\, NMR requ
 ires enhanced sensitivity\, resolution\, and spin-order lifetimes. To answ
 er these challenges\, we have to find ways that go further than increasing
  the strength of the static magnetic fields. \nIn order to improve the res
 olution and sensitivity of liquid-state NMR measurements\, we have used lo
 ng-lived magnetisation states shaped to yield narrow and intense signals u
 pon Fourier transform. This opens the way for studies of biomolecules one 
 order of magnitude larger than the current threshold. Dynamic nuclear pola
 rization (DNP) has been used to couple nuclear spins to the large populati
 on reservoir of electrons and thereby considerably enhance the sensitivity
  of NMR measurements. Enhanced solid-state NMR holds the promise of obtain
 ing atomic-resolution information from biomolecules that are challenging t
 o crystallise. The latest achievements in this area at EPFL will be presen
 ted.
