 \nLet $R$ be a commutative ring an let $I\\subset R$ be an ideal. Suppose 
 that there is a surjective homomorphism $(R/I)^n\\to I/I^2$ for some $n\\i
 n \n$. A classical question is to know if this surjection lifts to a surje
 ctive homomorphism $R^n\\to I$. We give necessary and sufficient condition
 s for the question to have a positive answer in case R is smooth over a fi
 eld and derive several result from this\, showing in particular that the q
 uestion has a positive answer over polynomial rings.
