DESCRIPTION:Olivier Roy\, Delphinus Medical Technologies\, USA\, and Karma
nos Cancer Institute\, USA\nBreast cancer is one of the leading causes of
mortality among women. In the United States\, recent statistics have shown
that approximatively 12.3% of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer
at some point during their lifetime.\nThe current gold standard for breast
cancer screening is mammography. While mammography has been demonstrated
to reduce mortality\, it involves radiation\, compression\, and is known t
o perform poorly for women with dense breast tissue who are at a much high
er risk for developing breast cancer.\nTo address the limitations of the c
urrent breast cancer screening technologies\, we have developed SoftVue\,
a whole breast ultrasound imaging system based on the principles of ultras
 ound tomography.\nIn this presentation\, I will describe our technology\,
and explain some of the technical\, clinical\, and regulatory challenges a
ssociated with bringing a research prototype to the market.\nBio: Olivier
Roy received the M.Sc. degree in communication systems from the Ecole Poly
technique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)\, Switzerland\, in 2004\, and the
Ph.D. degree from the same institution in 2008.\nFrom October 2004 to Nove
mber 2008\, he was a Research Assistant at the Audiovisual Communications
Laboratory at EPFL. From June to August 2007\, he joined Phonak\, a hearin
g aid company based in Stäfa\, Switzerland\, to develop noise reduction s
chemes for binaural hearing aids. He was a visiting lecturer at EPFL from
March to July 2009. From September 2009 to August 2010\, he was a Post-doc
toral Fellow at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit MI. He developed
ultrasound tomography algorithms for breast imaging. In September 2010 he
became a founding member of Delphinus Medical Technologies\, a start-up co
 mpany commercializing a fast\, reliable\, operator independent\, and non-i
onizing modality for breast cancer detection. He has held various position
s at Delphinus\, and is now its Director of Research and Development. Sinc
e September 2011\, he has also held an Adjunct Assistant Professor positio
n in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute
.\nHis research interests are in sampling\, distributed estimation and cod
 ing\, microphone array processing\, de-noising\, inverse problems\, and ul
 trasound tomography.
