DESCRIPTION:Dr. Roderich Gross\, University of Sheffield\nRobot swarms are
often said to exhibit emergent properties. Yet\, it is possible to design
controllers with predictable outcome. We illustrate this for canonical pr
oblems\, including multi-robot rendezvous and cooperative transport. The s
implicity of the controllers (some do not even require arithmetic computat
ion) facilitates their analysis. We also present a formal method that\, gi
ven a specification\, produces a controller and associated source code. We
present experimental results obtained with up to 600 physical robots.\nIn
the second part of the talk\, we address the problem of inferring the rul
es of swarming agents through observation. We propose Turing co-evolution
 – the first system identification method not to rely on pre-defined metr
ics – and test it on a physical swarm of robots. We also outline our rec
ent efforts towards an artificial evolution of energy autonomous organisms
in physical space.\nBio: Roderich Groß received a Computer Science degre
e from TU Dortmund University in 2001 and a PhD degree from the Universit
é libre de Bruxelles in 2007. From 2005 to 2009 he was a JSPS Fellow at T
okyo Institute of Technology\, a Research Associate at University of Brist
ol\, a Marie Curie Fellow at Unilever\, and a Marie Curie Fellow at EPFL.
Since 2010\, he has been with the Department of Automatic Control and Syst
ems Engineering at the University of Sheffield\, where he is currently a S
enior Lecturer. His research interests include distributed robotics and na
tural computing. He has authored more than 60 publications on these topics
\, which have been cited 1770 times. His h-index is 21. Dr Groß serves/ha
s served as the General Chair of DARS 2016\, Editor of IROS (from 2015)\,
Associate Editor of IROS & ICRA (since 2012)\, Program Co-Chair of AAMAS 2
016 (robotics track)\, ANTS 2012\, and TAROS 2011\, Part Editor of the Spr
inger Handbook of Computational Intelligence\, and Associate Editor of Swa
rm Intelligence\, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters\, and IEEE Computat
 ional Intelligence Magazine.
