DESCRIPTION:Prof. Theodoros G. Papaioannou\, National and Kapodistrian Uni
versity of Athens (GR)\nBIOENGINEERING SEMINARAbstract:\nThe risk for card
iovascular (CV) events\, fatal or non-fatal\, remains increased worldwide
despite the advances in biotechnology and drug development. One of the mos
t important risk factors\, related with CV disease\, complications and mor
tality\, is the increased arterial blood pressure (BP). The technological
innovations occurring during the last few decades in blood pressure measur
ement and monitoring are dramatically influencing our current knowledge co
ncerning the assessment and treatment of hypertension. Wearable devices an
d other novel methodologies\, far beyond classic\, traditional BP sphygmom
anometry at the brachial artery\, promise a lot for the optimization of CV
risk assessment and ultimately for better prevention and more effective t
reatment of BP-related diseases and complications.Bio:\nTheodoros G. Papai
oannou is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the Medical
School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA). He earned
his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at National Technical University of
Athens. He received his Ph.D. by the Medical School of UoA.\nTheodore Papa
ioannou is Head of Biomedical Engineering Unit and Biostatistics Unit at t
he First Department of Cardiology of the Medical School of National and Ka
 podistrian University of Athens.
