DESCRIPTION:Prof. Hosein Asadi\nWith tremendous amount of data being produ
ced every day\, high performance and highly available access to stored dat
a has become a continuous challenge for enterprise IT companies and financ
ial institutions. Due to the stringent criticality of customers’ data\,
financial institutions and online reservation systems mainly use high-end
data storage systems offered by EMC\, NetApp\, HP\, IBM\, and Hitachi. Wit
h significant cost imposed by big amount of data\, enterprise IT companies
such as Facebook and Google\, however\, have not welcomed high-end data s
torage systems and instead have tried to more take advantage of low-cost s
torage servers. Such systems\, however\, suffer from major limitations suc
h as long access latency\, limited throughput\, and less availability. In
this talk\, I first present common architectures used in data storage syst
ems and their main differences with storage servers. Then\, market trends
in storage systems and storage servers will be covered. Design challenges
of future storage systems are discussed next. Finally\, I will present few
research tracks on data storage systems including accelerating performanc
e evaluation of disk subsystems\, availability modeling\, and Total Cost o
f Ownerships (TCO) of storage systems.
