DESCRIPTION:Prof. Peter Gumbsch\, Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkstoffmechan
 ik IWM\, Freiburg Allemagne\nPlastic deformation of body-centered cubic (b
cc) metals is characterized by several specific aspects as for example a s
trong temperature dependence of the flow stress\, a brittle-to-ductile tra
nsition and a significant tension/compression asymmetry which are not know
n from other metallic materials. Most of these specifics can be related to
the behavior of screw dislocations in bcc metals [1] but this relation so
far is mostly anecdotal and materials specific differences can often not
be explained. We are therefore undertaking significant efforts of building
a rigorous multiscale modeling framework to describe these properties qua
ntitatively. This is based on an atomistic level understanding of dislocat
ion core structures and energetics. These simulations reveal important det
ails about the influence of non-Schmid (nonglide) stresses on the mobility
of screw dislocations which can then be implemented to mesoscopic discret
e dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations [2].\nI will report examples wher
e DDD simulations help to understand elementary processes of dislocation i
nteraction and show applications of DDD simulations to studies of plastici
ty in small-scale bcc single crystals. I will end with an outlook on the d
evelopment of continuum models based on advanced 3D dislocation density me
asures with evolution equations that naturally track dislocation motion [1
