DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ruth Signorell\, ETH Zürich\, Switzerland\nIt is well k
nown that light interacts differently with small particles compared with b
ulk materials or gas phase molecules\, producing spectral signatures that
strongly depend on particle properties\, such as size\, shape\, or archite
cture. Even molecular aggregates that are held together by weak intermolec
ular interactions can exhibit such characteristic spectral signatures. Thi
s talk provides an overview of our research in this field. I will present
our latest results on the behavior of slow electrons in molecular aggregat
es and nanoscale aerosol particles obtained from angle-resolved photoelect
ron spectroscopy. In the second part\, I will introduce a new experimental
setup that combines Laval expansions with mass spectrometric detection\,
which is intended for the study of fundamental aspects of gas phase nuclea
tion. Finally\, I will briefly discuss our latest attempts to perform spec
troscopic studies on single submicron-sized aerosol droplets in optical tr
 aps.
