DESCRIPTION:Hollender\, Juliane (EAWAG)\nIn recent years the occurence of
polar organic micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals in wastewater\, surf
ace water\, groundwater and finally drinking water has gained more and mor
e attention. A broad spectrum of compounds with different properties can b
e detected by powerful analytical instrumentation like liquid chromatograp
hy coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. High resolution mass spectrometr
y allows also for detection of unknowns such as transformation products fo
rmed from the micropollutants. Adverse effects at environmental concentrat
ion levels have been unambiguously shown only for a few micropollutants bu
t the high number of compounds asks for new elimination strategies. Beside
s prevention strategies at the source additional treatment steps such as o
zonation or adsorption at activated carbon within the sewage treatment pro
cess are currently investigated. Scope of the presentation is to give an o
verview about origin and entry of polar micropollutants in the aquatic env
ironment\, their environmental behaviour as well as their elimination in s
ewage treatment plants equipped with different techniques.
