DESCRIPTION:Benoît Chachuat\, ICL\nBio: My research interests are in the
general area of Process Systems Engineering (PSE)\, with emphasis on globa
 l optimization\, optimization-based process control\, and numerical comput
ation. My primary research objective is to develop new methods\, concepts
and tools for the fast and reliable optimization of complex process system
s.\nApplications in the field of process design and operations aim to deve
lop safe\, environmentally and economically sustainable (bio)chemical proc
esses\, including micro power generation\, integrated biotechnological pro
cesses for bioenergy production and waste treatment. Other applications ar
e in the field of signal transduction in systems biology.\nMany engineerin
g design and control problems can be formulated naturally in a set-theoret
ic framework. A number of key set-theoretic concepts were proposed in the
early 1970s\, but their systematic application was not possible until enou
gh computational capability became widely available. Today\, many such met
hods and tools are available for the estimation and control of linear syst
ems - witness the popularity of Matlab's multi-parametric toolbox - but it
is less so for nonlinear systems. In this presentation\, we give an overv
iew of recent developments in set-theoretic methods for nonlinear systems
in our research group. Central to these approaches is the ability to compu
te tight enclosures of the range of multivariate systems\, e.g. using elli
psoidal calculus or higher-order inclusion techniques based on multivariat
e polynomials\, as well as the ability to propagate these enclosures throu
gh time for bounding dynamic systems. We illustrate these developments wit
h a range of applications\, including the determination of all equilibrium
points and bifurcations in a given domain\; the reachability analysis of
nonlinear ODE or DAE systems\; and the solution of set-membership paramete
 r estimation problems.
