DESCRIPTION:Zhongjie Lin\, PhD\nDr. Zhongjie Lin is an Associate Professor
  of Architecture and Urbanism and the Director of the Master of Urban Desi
 gn program at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is also a co-f
 ounder of Futurepolis\, an award-winning multi-disciplinary design practic
 e. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow\, Woodrow Wilson Fellow\, and Abe Fello
 w among other research positions. He is an Honorary Professor of Xiamen Un
 iversity and a Visiting Professor of Tongji University. Dr. Lin’s resear
 ch focuses on modern architectural avant-garde movements\, theory and prac
 tice of urban design\, and contemporary architecture and urbanism in East 
 Asia. He is the author of Kenzo Tange and the Metabolist Movement: Urban U
 topias of Modern Japan and Visions of the City\, and a coauthor of Urban D
 esign in the Global Perspective and The Making of a Chinese Model New Town
 . He received a Ph.D. in Architectural History and Theory from the Univers
 ity of Pennsylvania in the U.S. and a Master of Architecture from Tongji U
 niversity in China.\nThis talk examines the reciprocal relationship betwee
 n architecture and the changing social structure in contemporary Asia thro
 ugh a series of designs or visionary plans. It is based on two recent rese
 arch projects\, on Japanese Metabolist movement in the 1960s and the ongoi
 ng new town movement in China respectively\, both driven by some utopian n
 otions of architecture and society. The comparison and linkage of these tw
 o architectural phenomena reveals the contradictions between ideal and rea
 lity\, vision and disillusion\, order and freedom\, and utopia and dystopi
 a\, and sheds a new light on the challenges and future of East Asian socie
