DESCRIPTION:Dr Philipp Meier\, Surface Water Research and Management - EAW
AG\nAbstract:\nSmall hydropower plants are considered as relatively enviro
nment friendly. However\, in Alpine river basins\, where residual flow rea
ches tend to be long\, significant impacts on riverine ecosystems can be e
xpected. A framework that establishes trade-offs between electricity produ
ction and multiple ecological objectives is  presented. It is shown that
including objectives that consider connectivity within the river network i
nfluence the decision about the suitability of a specific location for hyd
ropower development.Short biography:\nDr Philipp Meier is Dr. sc. ETH Envi
ronmental Engineering (2012). He has since worked (2012-2013) as a post-do
ctoral fellow at the Université Laval\, Québec City\, Canada on project
"Rolling-horizon optimisation framework for multi-reservoir systems based
on hydrological ensemble forecasts" while being research associate\, Unive
rsity College London / University of Manchester on project "Software devel
oper for an open source software platform for water management modelling".
 \nHis research interests are: Hydro-economic modelling\, Multi-objective o
ptimisation\, Hydrological forecasting and data assimilation as well as Re
 mote sensing for hydrological applications
