DESCRIPTION:Dr Kai-Uwe Goss\, Helmholtz Centre (UFZ)\, Department Analytic
 al Environmental Chemistry\, Leipzig\, DE\nAbstract:\nThe distribution of
organic chemicals in organisms is important for assessing the toxicity of
chemicals. Our understanding of these processes is still very fragmentary
when it comes to ionic organic chemicals. This talk will a) present experi
mental and modelling results on the equilibrium partitioning of organic io
ns to albumin\, muscle protein\, and membrane lipids\; and b) discuss the
permeability of ions through biological membranes and how this effects tox
icity via the ion trap mechanism and uncouplingShort biography:\nKai-Uwe G
oss studied Geoecology in Bayreuth\, Germany. He finished his PhD in envir
onmental chemistry in 1993. This was followed by a 2-year Post-Doc positio
n at the University of Minnesota\, USA. The next 10 years he worked at EAW
AG and ETH Zürich with Prof. Rene Schwarzenbach. Since 2007 he is heading
the Department of Analytical Environmental Chemistry at the Helmholtz Cen
tre for Environmental Research in Leipzig\, Germany.
