DESCRIPTION:Dr Miki Hondzo\, professor of Civil Engineering\, St. Anthony
 Falls Laboratory\, University of Minnesota\, USA\nAbstract:\nFluid flows i
n water environments range from visible large-scale eddies down to microsc
opic scales invisible to the human eye.  Life in water ecosystems is sust
ained by the interaction of organisms through their physical environments\
, including moving fluids.  Ecological fluid mechanics is the study of th
e interaction between these moving fluids and the physiology\, metabolism\
, and behavior of living organisms.   Our research group conducts labora
tory investigations at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory\, University of Mi
nnesota.  A sample of our laboratory and field measurements with focus on
ecological fluid mechanics will be presented to depict the interaction be
tween moving fluids and freshwater aquatic organisms\, including various t
ype of algae\, cyanobacteria\, and macro-invertebrates. Emerging global en
vironmental issues relevant to water quality in freshwater ecosystems and
renewable energy production by microscopic algae will be depicted in the l
ight of ecological fluid mechanics.Short biography:\nMiki Hondzo is a Full
Professor in the Department of Civil\, Environmental\, and Geo- Engineeri
ng at the University of Minnesota\, Minneapolis.  The long-term goal of h
is research group at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory has been focused on
developing mechanistic understanding of how moving fluids affect biochemic
al processes in lakes\, wetlands\, streams\, and watersheds.  He is a fou
nder of “EcoLab\,” a research facility for studying the interdisciplin
ary nature of ecological fluid mechanics.  Prof. Hondzo is a recipient of
CAREER AWARD (National Science Foundation)\, Samuel Arnold Greeley Award
(ASCE Environmental Engineering\, best paper)\, Rudolph Hering Medal (ASCE
-EE\, best paper)\, and Founders Award (International Association on Water
  Quality\, best paper).   With his students\, post-doctoral researchers\
, and collaborators he has published nearly eighty peer-reviewed journal a
rticles\, three book chapters\, and a text book.
