DESCRIPTION:Dr Bernhard Thomaszewski\, Research Scientist\, Disney Researc
h\, Zurich\, Switzerland and adjunct lecturer at ETH Zürich\nAs a key adv
antage over conventional manufacturing technologies\, 3D printing has the
ability to create complexity and variety at no extra cost. This fact indic
ates the possibility of a mass customization culture in which we personali
ze designs according to our needs and preferences and fabricate them at ho
me on a 3D printer. But while there is already a thriving market of consum
er-level 3D printers\, the tools that would empower average users to desig
 n 3D-printable content are still largely lacking.\nIn this talk\, I will h
ighlight a number of challenges that arise when creating such tools and il
lustrate some key concepts on the example of physical characters such as m
echanical toys\, robotic creatures\, and other mechanically-functional mod
els. In particular\, I will address the question of how to design mechanis
ms that are able to reproduce desired motions\, and how to create robotic
creatures that can locomote in stable and compelling ways.\nBio:\nBernhard
Thomaszewski is a Research Scientist at Disney Research Zurich\, where he
leads the group on Computational Design and Digital Fabrication. He obtai
ned his Master’s degree (Diplom) and PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in Computer Sci
ence from the University of Tübingen. Prior to joining Disney Research\,
he was a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich\, where he is an adjunct l
ecturer today.\nBernhard's research interests are in the areas of computat
ional design\, digital fabrication\, and computer animation. His current f
ocus is on design tools that allow non-expert users to create functional c
 ontent for digital fabrication devices.
