DESCRIPTION:By : Marcel Salathé - EPFLVideo of his talkAbstract :\nThe un
precedented rise of mobile\, internet-enabled devices across the globe has
created a new field of "digital epidemiology”. From small-scale studies
of high-resolution contact networks to large-scale digital disease detect
ion systems\, we are witnessing a revolution in data availability and acce
ss that is continuing to affect every single aspect of human health. I wil
l present some of my ongoing projects involving wireless sensors\, social
media data\, and image data that reflect both the opportunities and the te
chnical\, social and organizational challenges around this rapidly evolvin
g field.Bio :\nMarcel Salathé is an Associate Professor at EPFL in Lausan
ne and Geneva\, at both the School of Life Sciences\, and the School of Co
mputer and Communication Sciences. He is originally from Basel\, where he
got his Masters in Biology. He then went to ETH to obtain a PhD in Theoret
ical Biology. After that\, he received a Branco Weiss Fellowship and went
to Stanford as a postdoc. In 2010\, he became an Assistant Professor at Pe
nn State at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. He spent 2014 in t
he Bay area\, first at Y Combinator\, then as a visiting Assistant Profess
or at Stanford.\nMarcel's main motivation is to take advantage of the digi
tal and mobile revolution to do better epidemiology\, and ultimately to he
lp ensure that everyone in the world can enjoy the same levels of health.M
