 and Cancer at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)\, and is Founding M
 anaging Director of the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and 
 Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM) in Heidelberg\, Germany. One of the goals 
 of his team is to elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of hematopoie
 tic stem cell self-renewal and differentiation as well as to characterize 
 the complex dynamic interactions within the stem cell-niche unit. In addit
 ion\, the group has recently established a program to functionally charact
 erize malignant stem cells of leukemias and carcinomas at various levels. 
 Analysis of model systems in combination with primary patient derived samp
 les is used to develop innovative strategies to detect and target cancer a
 nd metastasis stem cells in clinical settings.
