DESCRIPTION:Prof Ali Rezai\, Ohio State University\, USA.\nDeep Brain Stim
ulation (DBS) has been implanted in over 130\,000 patients worldwide to mo
dulate the motor\, sensory\, cognitive and behavioral networks in patients
with medication intractable conditions.  This lecture will review the cu
rrent applications of DBS and examine its use for modulation of cognitive
and behavioral deficits.  We will discuss the circuitry and surgical targ
ets underlying mood\, anxiety\, drive and behavioral function\, and will e
xplore the role of DBS in obsessive compulsive disorder\, depression\, add
iction\, and other conditions with behavioral self regulation such as trau
matic brain injury\, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.Bio: Dr. Rezai ear
ned his medical degree with honors from the University of Southern Califor
nia and underwent neurosurgical training at New York University. He comple
ted his subspecialty training in functional neurosurgery at the University
of Toronto and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm\, Sweden. He then jo
ined the neurosurgical faculty at New York University Medical Center\, bec
oming the director of the Center for Functional and Restorative Neurosurge
ry until January 2000\, when he joined the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation. Dr. Rezai was the director of the Center for Neurological Res
toration\, as well as the Jane and Lee Seidman Chair in Functional Neurosu
rgery at the Cleveland Clinic until August 2009\, when he joined the facul
ty at The Ohio State University in Columbus\, Ohio. He is currently associ
ate dean of Neuroscience and the director and CEO of the OSU Neurological
 Institute.\nMore information here.
