DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lars Bollen\, Twente\nBio: Lars studied Physics and Comput
er Science for Higher Education at the University Duisburg-Essen in German
y\, where he finished his PhD in 2009 in the field of applied computer sci
ence and mobile learning in the COLLIDE research group. Currently\, he is
working as a post-doctoral research scientist in the Department of Instruc
tional Technology at the University Twente in the Netherlands. His researc
h interests include model-based and inquiry learning\, modelling & sketchi
ng\, visual modelling languages and environments\, mobile devices and pen-
based devices in learning scenarios\, and (inter)action analysis.\nModels
of scientific phenomena have always played a key role in science education
. With the help of computer-supported learning environments\, students are
not limited to work with and learn from given models anymore. By creating
models and simulations themselves\, learners can externalise\, share\, te
st\, and revise their mental models. Thus\, we went from learning with mod
els towards learning by modelling. This talk presents various modelling ap
proaches and tools for learners\, which differ in their level of complexit
y\, the required modelling expertise\, and the targeted age groups.
