DESCRIPTION:Prof. Oliver Brock\, Technische Universität Berlin\nThe manip
 ulation skills of robots remain vastly inferior to those of humans. Studie
 s of human manipulation reveal a possible reason: humans employ strategies
  that are fundamentally different from those realized in robots.  In cont
 rast to robots\, humans extensively use contact with the environment to im
 plement manipulation competence. \nIn this talk\, I will describe a new a
 pproach to robot grasping and manipulation\, motivated by human manipulati
 on.  I will present insights obtained from experiments with human grasper
 s\, efforts to build a novel type of robot hand capable of realizing human
  grasping strategies\, and novel planning and perception algorithms for ge
 nerating appropriate manipulation plans.\nBio: Oliver Brock is the Alexand
 er von Humboldt Professor of Robotics in the School of Electrical Engineer
 ing and Computer Science at the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany.
  He received his Diploma in Computer Science in 1993 from the Technische U
 niversität Berlin and his Master's and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Sta
 nford University in 1994 and 2000\, respectively. He also held post-doctor
 al positions at Rice University and Stanford University. Starting in 2002\
 , he was an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Department 
 of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, before to
  moving back to the Technische Universität Berlin in 2009.\nThe research 
 of Brock's lab\, the Robotics and Biology Laboratory\, focuses on autonomo
 us mobile manipulation\, interactive perception\, grasping\, manipulation\
 , soft hands\, interactive learning\, motion generation\, and the applicat
 ion of algorithms and concepts from robotics to computational problems in 
 structural molecular biology. He is also the president of the Robotics: Sc
 ience and Systems foundation.
