DESCRIPTION:Dr António A. Correia\, Researcher at Earthquake Engineering
and Structural Dyanmics\, Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Enginee
 ring (LNEC)\, Lisbon\, Portugal\nThe interaction between a superstructure\
, its foundation and the supporting terrain may have a strong influence on
the seismic response of structures. An overview of soil-structure interac
tion (SSI) phenomena and effects in the linear elastic range will pave the
way for a presentation of recent research work that contributes to clarif
y the effects of nonlinear dynamic interaction on the seismic response of
soil-foundation-superstructure systems. Such work includes several experim
ental results of seismically loaded structures on shallow foundations.\nTh
eoretical advancements are also presented\, in relation to macro-element n
umerical modelling of the soil-foundation system. These macro-element mode
ls represent the nonlinear soil behaviour at near-field and the ground sub
stratum dynamic characteristics at far-field\, as well as the interaction
with the seismic response of the structure. All aspects of elastic and ine
lastic behaviour of the foundation system are thus encompassed into one co
mputational entity and are described by the behaviour of a single point at
the centre of the foundation.\nThese developments are then used for suppo
rting the concept of a controlled share of ductility demand between the su
perstructure and the foundation as a key ingredient for a rational and int
egrated approach to seismic design of foundations and structures. This des
ign methodology is briefly introduced and validated. Finally\, an applicat
ion example to an outstanding structure is presented.\nBio : After graduat
ing in Civil Engineering at the Technical Univ. of Lisbon\, Portugal\, Ant
ónio A. Correia had a challenging experience as a professional engineer i
n design companies and lecturer at different universities which led him to
further specialize in both Structures and Geotechnics. This path eventual
ly resulted in a PhD in Earthquake Engineering on the topic of SSI at the
UME School\, IUSS Pavia\, Italy.\nHe is currently a Researcher at the Eart
hquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics Unit of the Portuguese National
Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC)\, where he conducts shake table t
ests and structural vulnerability and risk studies\, alongside a continued
activity on the development of advanced numerical models. He also serves
as Technical Secretary at Sub-Commission 8 (Eurocode 8) of Technical Commi
ttee 250 (Structural Eurocodes) of the European Standardization Committee
(CEN/TC250/SC8).\nHis main expertise research and interests are in the fie
lds of experimental assessment and numerical modelling of the seismic resp
onse of structures\, as well as on seismic risk\, structural vulnerability
  and design code developments.
