DESCRIPTION:While modern processors are capable of processing data at neve
r before \nseen speeds\, this capability must be matched with an equally c
apable \nmemory system. It is for this reason that a large chunk of modern
\nprocessor chips is devoted to the memory hierarchy. Our work has been \
nlooking at the design of these memory hierarchies. I will overview two \n
recent results. The first\, Phantom-BTB\, freeloads on the existing memory
\nhierarchy to store program metadata. This is information about program
\nbehavior that is used at runtime to anticipate performance or other \nde
grading events and act accordingly to improve system behavior. \nPhantom-B
TB uses the on-chip memory hierarchy to obtain the performance \npossible
with otherwise impractical to build (too large and too slow) \nstructures.
  The second work\, revisits on-chip memory coherence\, that is\, \nhow a p
rocessor can find where and who has copies of cached memory data. \nCohere
nce can greatly impact program performance in today's chip \nmultiprocesso
rs. Taking advantage of the opportunities that on-chip \nintegration offer
s\, tagless coherence reduces the cost of implementing \ncoherence while m
aintaining competitive performance.\n\nBIO: Andreas Moshovos is an associa
te professor at the University of \nToronto. He has taught computer archit
ecture also at Northwestern \nUniversity\, the Hellenic Open University an
d the National University of \nAthens\, Greece. He learned about computer
architecture first at the \nUniversity of Crete\, Greece\, and then at the
University of Wisconsin-\nMadison where he worked on memory dependence pr
 ediction\, a technique \nused in many modern processor designs\, until 199
 8. Andreas is interested \nin designing computer systems that take advanta
ge of program behavior to \nimprove performance\, power and other characte
ristics. He received the \nNational Science Foundation CAREER award in 200
0\, a Semiconductor \nResearch Corporation Inventor Recognition Award in 2
003\, and IBM Faculty \nPartnership Awards in 2008 and 2009.
