DESCRIPTION:Sir John Ball\nDirector of the Oxford Centre for Nonlinear Par
tial Differential Equations\nWhen a new phase is nucleated in a martensiti
c solid phase transformation\, it has to fit geometrically onto the parent
phase\, forming interfaces between the phases accompanied by possibly com
plex microstructure. The talk will describe some mathematical issues invol
ved in understanding such questions of compatibility and their influence o
n metastability\, as illustrated by recent experimental discoveries.\nFor
liquid crystals planar (as opposed to point and line) defects are not usua
lly considered\, but there are some situations in which they seem to be re
levant\, such as for smectic. A thin films where compatibility issues not
unlike those for martensitic materials arise.
