DESCRIPTION:Prof. Karl Kunisch\, Institute of Mathematics and Scientific C
omputing\, University of Graz\nIt is only since recently that the choice o
f the control cost functional in optimal control problems related to parti
al differential equations is receiving special attention.  It has been re
cognized that the use of non-smooth functionals is of particular interest.
L1 - and measure valued controls lead the sparsity properties of the opti
mal controls. This can be used to design "cheap" controls\, or to solve op
timal actuator or inverse source problems. Non-smooth costs are also effic
ient to address multi-bang control and switching control problems.\nTo cop
e with the resulting numerical challenges we propose the use of semi-smoot
h Newton methods. Applications to optimal control for the wave equation an
d to quantum control problems will be presented.
