DESCRIPTION:Dr Angelos Mallios\, Underwater Robotics Lab\, Universitat de
Girona (SP) / Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (GR)\nThe development of
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) has offered numerous advantages\, b
ut has also presented new challenges. One of the most significant challeng
es is the problem of underwater navigation or\, in other words\, how to de
termine the vehicle's position within the environment so it can take the c
orrect actions to successfully accomplish the mission. This talk first bri
efly reviews advantages in underwater localization techniques. Next\, exam
ines the problem of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)\, a stoch
astic navigation methodology which is a rapidly growing research topic\, a
nd present real life results. Finally\, future challenges in underwater ve
hicle navigation will be discussed. Advances in vehicle navigation will en
able new missions for submersibles which will further increase their value
  to the oceanographic community.
