DESCRIPTION:Dr Marino Gatto\, Ecology\, Politecnico di Milano\, IT\nEcolog
y studies the interactions of organisms with the surrounding environment\,
be it biotic or abiotic. The response to environment occurs on a hierarch
y of spatial and temporal scales and/or structures that must be suitably i
ncorporated into ecological models. The seminar will focus on the analysis
of spatial patterns and the relevant modeling that explains their formati
on\, which is crucially dependent on the movement of organisms. Four cases
will be presented: • the vegetation patterns as determined by seed pred
ation\; • the spatial distribution and evolution of waterborne diseases\
, in particular of cholera\; • the dynamics and spread of aquatic invasi
ve species\, in particular the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha\; • the
spatiotemporal dynamics of the European eel Anguilla anguilla\, a species
with a complex life cycle encompassing freshwater and Ocean.
