  and Biochemistry\nThere is a great need to design and deploy chemical sen
 sor systems for monitoring aquatic systems. Electrochemical sensing princi
 ples come to the environmental sciences from fields where they have previo
 usly been very successful\, such as clinical diagnostics. The level of sta
 bility and reproducibility required in clinical monitoring\, which is on t
 he order of microvolt\, is assured by careful temperature control and repe
 titive recalibration after sample measurement. This talk will explain the 
 different electrochemical methodologies that are most attractive to electr
 ochemical monitoring of aquatic systems\, including our newest research di
 rection\, the development of calibration-free sensing concepts based on th
 in layer coulometry. Parallel efforts to use microelectrode integrated sys
 tems to detect trace level contaminants in natural waters and that has alr
 eady found numerous applications for in situ monitoring will subsequently 
 be summarized.
