DESCRIPTION:Prof. Alexandre Caboussat\nWe discuss the problem of finding t
he best constant in a Sobolev inequality involving the embedding of a Sob
olev space onto the \nspace of continuous functions. This (kind of) non-sm
ooth eigenvalue problem can be formulated as a constrained optimization pr
oblem from the calculus of variations. Several strategies can be advocated
for its solution. Among them\, we present a methodology combining finite
element approximations and an appropriate augmented Lagrangian\, and using
duality and control arguments.\n\nNumerical experiments illustrate the ac
curacy and the remarkable \nconvergence properties of the augmented Lagran
gian method.\n\nThis is joint work with Roland Glowinski.
