DESCRIPTION:Carrick Detweiler\, Computer Science and Electrical Engineerin
g at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Distributed Robotics\nMore
than 70% of our planet is covered by water. To better understand our world
and the impact of global warming on the world's oceans\, lakes and rivers
\, we must better understand the underwater environment. Underwater operat
ions\, however\, are much more difficult than their land-based counterpart
s\, due in large part to the challenges of collecting and monitoring data
underwater.\n\nThis talk will present a system of underwater sensors and r
obots which aim to ease data collection and monitoring in an underwater en
 vironment. This system is easily deployable\, self-localizes to\nprovide m
eaningful geographic information to the sensor readings \, provides low-ba
ndwidth\, and uses real-time feedback. We will discuss the system architec
ture\, the algorithms required to control the system\, and our experimenta
l data from several field deployments.
