DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jason K. Cooper\, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\nB
 io: I am a Research Scientist at the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynt
 hesis (JCAP)\, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, where I study new m
 aterials in development for solar water splitting (H2O + hv --> H2 + 1/2O2
 ) as well as CO2 reduction. My primary focus is in understanding the elect
 ronic structure of these materials using spectroscopic and computational m
 ethods. My research goals are to better understand carrier physics in thes
 e new materials in an attempt to improve processes such as carrier recombi
 nation\, transport\, and energetics favorable for solar water splitting an
 d CO2 reduction to liquid fuels.\nDr. Cooper will discuss the general chal
 lenges of artificial photosynthesis and will focus on bismuth vanadate\, a
  light absorbing material to drive water oxidation.
