DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Deeds\, University of St. Thomas\n"Opportunity Rec
ognition Among Scientists"Abstract\nWe address the question of how context
affects whether and how scientists recognize commercialization opportunit
ies.  In recognizing opportunities\, research scientists must bridge the
gap between the world of scientific discovery and the world of business an
d markets. Our model analyzes how individuals’ social context\, specific
ally the institutional context\, geographic region and personal networks a
ffect perceptions of potential gain and controllability\, which in turn le
ad to recognition of commercialization opportunities.   Our theoretical
model draws on entrepreneurship and managerial cognition research\, and re
search on entrepreneurial context\, including institutional and social net
works perspectives. The model has implications for research in opportunity
recognition\, particularly in the research science context\, and for poli
cies designed to increase entrepreneurial behavior.Bio\nDavid Deeds is the
